The First State Bank of Bigfork, Then and Now

The First State Bank of Bigfork traces its beginnings to 1912, when a group of investors—F.P. Sheldon, who served as President; S.J. Moran, Vice President; A.E. Peterson, Cashier; and A. Wedge, Jr.—founded the bank at its original location on the south end of Main Street.

In 1933, C.F. “Slim” Gilbertson joined the bank as Cashier. He held that role until 1959, when he became Vice President. After 38 years of dedicated service, Gilbertson retired in 1971.

The Latterell family became involved in the early 1940s. Louis M. Latterell, originally from the Kelliher area, served as President from 1942 to 1957. His nephew, Oliver J. Latterell, succeeded him as President in 1958 after previously serving as Vice President. Oliver’s son, L.J. “Larry” Latterell, entered the family business in 1968, ultimately becoming President in 1982—a role he held until his passing in 2001.

Larry and his wife, Liz, were highly respected community members who were deeply involved in local business, church, and civic organizations. Larry served for many years on the Bigfork Volunteer Fire Department, while Liz served two terms as Mayor of Bigfork.

Jef Fisher joined the bank in 1978, becoming Senior Vice President in 1988 and President in 2001. Today, Larry’s son, Mike Latterell, serves as CEO. The bank expanded in 2011 with the acquisition of an off-site location at 184 Main Street East in Kelliher, Minnesota. Mike’s cousin, Darin Latterell, manages the Kelliher branch.
